André Olbrich — born in Germany on 3 May 1967 — is Blind Guardian's founding guitarist and, alongside Hansi Kürsch, the band's principal composer. His function is melodic before it is rhythmic. While Marcus Siepen holds the ground, Olbrich writes the lines that give each track its identity: guitar themes that work as recurring motifs, returning across the album when the narrative calls for them, and solos built as complete melodies rather than displays of speed. He is responsible for the harmonic design that let Blind Guardian move beyond conventional power metal. From Imaginations from the Other Side (1995) and above all Nightfall in Middle-Earth (1998), the band began assembling arrangements with acoustic instruments, orchestral layers and structures that depart from the verse-chorus format — work that requires thinking in composition, not just in riffs. That path reached its extreme on Legacy of the Dark Lands (2019), recorded with a full symphony orchestra and no distorted guitars. He has been in the band since its founding in 1987, without interruption.
