Apollo Papathanasio — born in 1969 — was Firewind's vocalist between 2006 and 2013, the band's period of greatest international reach. He is Greek raised in Sweden, and that double origin explains his path: he moved through both the Scandinavian circuit — with a spell in Spiritual Beggars, Michael Amott's band — and the Greek one, and came to Firewind bringing the singing school of Swedish hard rock, lower and rougher than the high register typical of European power metal. His voice is on the records that made the group's name: Allegiance (2006), The Premonition (2008), Days of Defiance (2010) and Few Against Many (2012). These are the years in which Firewind settled as the Greek metal band with the widest international reach, and also the period in which Gus G. took over Ozzy Osbourne's guitar — with the group staying active in parallel. To succeed and be succeeded in a band with five singers in two decades means sustaining a repertoire written for different timbres; Papathanasio covers the longest and best-remembered phase of that sequence.
