Brent Hinds was guitarist, one of three vocalists and a co-founder of Mastodon, a member from 2000 to 2025. Born in Helena, Alabama, in 1974, he brought to metal a vocabulary that did not come from metal. His guitar is the reason Mastodon never sounded like its contemporaries. Hinds grew up playing banjo and music of the American South, and carried into the band the phrasing of bluegrass, the inflections of country and the use of slide — devices that, applied over heavy riffs and irregular metres, produced something without parallel in the genre. His solos are psychedelic and melodic where speed would be expected, and his voice, hoarse and deliberately off-pitch, contrasts with those of Troy Sanders and Brann Dailor, the group's other two. He is on the whole classic discography: Remission (2002), Leviathan (2004), Blood Mountain (2006), Crack the Skye (2009), The Hunter (2011), Once More 'Round the Sun (2014), Emperor of Sand (2017) and Hushed and Grim (2021). He left Mastodon in March 2025. The band announced a mutual decision; Hinds later stated publicly that he had been fired. He died on 20 August 2025, aged 51, in a motorcycle collision in Atlanta.
