Brian Burkheiser

Brian Burkheiser — I Prevail's vocalist — is responsible for the clean singing of a band whose formula depends on the contrast between two voices. I Prevail works with a format metalcore made canonical but which few execute well: one clean vocalist and one guttural sharing the same track. It works when both have equivalent authority — if the melodic singing is weak, the chorus sounds like a commercial concession pasted onto the rest. Burkheiser shares that function with Eric Vanlerberghe, and it is the melodic timbre that carries the choruses through which the band entered the American charts. His path includes an episode that defines part of the group's work: he suffered a vocal cord injury that kept him away for a period and threatened to end his career. The album Trauma (2019) deals directly with that and with his mental health during the period — material that earned the band Grammy nominations and placed it among the central names of American heavy rock of the decade. It is a case in which the exposure of vulnerability, in a genre historically averse to the subject, became the axis of the repertoire rather than a footnote.
