Brian Tatler has been Saxon's guitarist since 2023, and his arrival carries a symbolic weight beyond the role itself: he is the founder and guitarist of Diamond Head, one of the most influential bands of the NWOBHM. Born in 1960, he formed Diamond Head in 1976 and wrote "Am I Evil?", "The Prince" and "Helpless" — material whose reach went far beyond the band that recorded it. Metallica re-recorded several of those tracks, and Lars Ulrich has publicly described Diamond Head as the reason he wanted to form a band at all: early Metallica is, to a large degree, that British repertoire accelerated. Few songwriters have had an influence so disproportionate to their own recognition. He joined Saxon in 2023 to take Paul Quinn's place in live performance, when the founder stepped away from touring, and became part of the current line-up. It is a meeting of two pillars of the same generation: two bands born in the same scene, in the same country, at the same moment, brought together almost fifty years later.
