Chris Bay — German vocalist, guitarist and keyboardist born in 1968 — is the founder of Freedom Call and the band's only constant across more than 25 years. Freedom Call was born in 1998 with a proposition running against the current of German metal at the time. While the genre was moving towards darker themes and heavier production, Bay put together a deliberately luminous band: major harmonies, choir-sung refrains, lyrics about hope and friendship. The band itself coined the term "happy metal" to describe the result — half joke, half precise definition. Bay writes, sings, plays guitar and keyboards, and produces. That concentration of functions explains the discography's coherence: eleven records between Stairway to Fairyland (1999) and Silver Romance (2024) that sound recognisably like the same band, despite the line-up changes around him. It is a case of authorship running through the entire structure of a band. Freedom Call is not a group with a singer; it is a composer's project that gathered musicians to perform it — and that has kept the same aesthetic idea for a quarter of a century, in a genre where most bands either change course or vanish.
