Freedom Call is a German power metal band formed in Nuremberg in 1998 by singer, guitarist and songwriter Chris Bay and drummer Dan Zimmermann, then also of Gamma Ray. Their stated goal was simple and deliberately unfashionable — to make "happy metal," an unashamedly bright, optimistic take on European power metal. The 1999 debut Stairway to Fairyland established the formula and earned the band an early support tour with Angra and Edguy. Crystal Empire (2001) and Eternity (2002) refined it, while The Circle of Life (2005) and the post-apocalyptic concept album Dimensions (2007) broadened the arrangements. Legend of the Shadowking (2010) and Land of the Crimson Dawn (2012) are widely regarded as career highlights. Chris Bay has been the band's constant through numerous line-up changes. Silver Romance (2024) marked the band's 25th anniversary. With eleven studio albums, Freedom Call remain one of melodic power metal's most reliably touring and most distinctly optimistic acts.
