Doug Scarratt has been Saxon's guitarist since 1996, when he took the place left by Graham Oliver. Born in 1959, he joined at one of the most delicate moments in the band's history: a founder's departure, followed by the legal dispute over the name, had left Saxon in a fragile position. His contribution was to restore stability to the guitar pairing. With Paul Quinn, Scarratt rebuilt the harmonised-guitar arrangement that is the group's sonic trademark, with a cleaner and more technical execution than his predecessor's, and it is that partnership which has carried the band's whole output since Unleash the Beast (1997). With almost three decades in the band, he is now the second longest-serving guitarist in Saxon's history, behind only Quinn.
