Eric Vanlerberghe — I Prevail's vocalist — is responsible for the guttural register of a band built on the contrast between two voices. That division is metalcore's structural formula, but I Prevail executes it with unusual balance: instead of reserving the growls for the verses and clean singing for the choruses, the two vocalists occupy comparable space, and the tracks alternate between them like a dialogue. Vanlerberghe shares the function with Brian Burkheiser, and it is his voice that gives the repertoire the weight sustaining the melodic passages. His importance grew in a specific period. When Burkheiser suffered a vocal cord injury that threatened to end his career, Vanlerberghe took on a larger share of the vocal work — a situation the band addressed openly on Trauma (2019), a record about that episode and about mental health that earned the group Grammy nominations. I Prevail is, alongside few others, one of the American heavy rock bands of the 2010s to reach a mass audience without abandoning the extreme register — and that half of the formula is his.
