Frank Aresti — born in the United States in 1967 — was Fates Warning's guitarist between 1985 and 1996, returning in later periods, and was in the band throughout the phase that established it. He shares the guitars with Jim Matheos in a relationship that differs from metal's usual model. It is not a matter of one rhythm guitarist and one soloist: the two parts interlace in independent lines, frequently in different metres, creating the contrapuntal texture that distinguishes the group's records. Playing that requires both to hold structures that do not lean on one another. He was on Awaken the Guardian (1986), No Exit (1988), Perfect Symmetry (1989), Parallels (1991) and Inside Out (1994) — the run that made Fates Warning one of the three founding bands of American progressive metal. He left in 1996, when the band reduced the line-up to the leaner format of A Pleasant Shade of Gray (1997), and returned to recordings and tours in later periods.
