Jelle Bakker — Dutch musician — works in the metal circuit of the Netherlands, one of Europe's most productive relative to the country's size. The Netherlands has around eighteen million inhabitants and produced Within Temptation, Epica, After Forever, Delain, Ayreon and Pestilence — a set covering everything from symphonic metal to technical death metal. No other country of comparable size has had equivalent influence in the genre. The explanation runs through infrastructure: an accessible music education system, public support for rehearsal and performance spaces, and a dense network of studios and technical professionals concentrated in a small territory. Musicians move easily between projects because distances are short and connections close. The result is a scene with constant output and a high technical level, in which players often work in more than one band at a time — a model sustaining activity even when no individual project reaches wide commercial scale.
