Kelly Gray — American guitarist and producer — has a path tied to the Seattle scene and to Queensrÿche, the band in which he served in two distinct periods. His wider contribution, though, is as a producer. Gray worked on production and mixing for bands from the American northwest at a time when the region became the centre of American rock — the same environment that produced grunge, though he worked mainly in heavy rock of an earlier lineage. In Queensrÿche he took the guitar chair replacing Chris DeGarmo, one of the band's principal writers, whose departure in 1997 marked the end of the classic phase. It is an uncomfortable position by definition: replacing the author of much of the repertoire the audience wants to hear. Producers who also play occupy a useful position in metal: they understand what a band has to deliver in the studio and, at the same time, what can be executed on stage. It is a double knowledge not always found in those who do only one of the two.
