Logan Mader — born in the United States in 1970 — was Machine Head's guitarist in the line-up that recorded Burn My Eyes (1994), and afterwards built a career in a territory entirely distinct from the stage. That debut album is one of the founding documents of groove metal: mid-tempo riffs in low tuning, weight built on rhythmic displacement, aggression without recourse to extreme speed. Mader shares the guitars with Robb Flynn in that construction and also stays for The More Things Change... (1997), before leaving the band in 1998. What came next is what makes his path unusual. Mader became a producer and mixing engineer, and in that role exerted far greater influence than as a player: he worked on records by central bands of modern metal, shaping the sound of a whole generation from the other side of the studio glass. He is a case of a musician whose most lasting contribution lies not in the recordings where he appears playing, but in those he helped others make.
