Marcus Siepen — born in Germany in 1968 — has been Blind Guardian's rhythm guitarist since 1987, a member of the original line-up and present across the band's entire discography. His function is the least noticed and one of the hardest in the repertoire. Blind Guardian's songs are dense by construction: choirs of dozens of vocal layers, overlaid guitar themes, acoustic and orchestral arrangements. Someone has to hold the harmonic structure firm underneath all that, at high tempos and with frequent changes of metre, and that is Siepen's job. He also carries the acoustic side — Blind Guardian uses acoustic guitar with a frequency unusual for the genre, in introductions, middle passages and whole tracks, and much of that work is his. He is, alongside André Olbrich, one of the two musicians who have crossed every phase of the band: from the fast power metal of the early records to the orchestral format of Legacy of the Dark Lands (2019).
