Michael Abdow — born in the United States in 1986 — has been Fates Warning's guitarist since 2017, part of the band's most recent line-up. He is the only member born after the group was founded, which means he came to an already consolidated repertoire — thirty-five years of material built on irregular metres, structures that do not return and a logic of counterpoint between the two guitars. His function is to share those lines with Jim Matheos, the founder and principal composer. In Fates Warning this is not a rhythm-and-lead relationship: the parts interlace independently, frequently in distinct metres, and reproducing that live demands precise reading before any technical display. He took part in Long Day Good Night (2020), the group's most recent album, and also works on his own projects as instrumentalist and composer.
