Michiel Papenhove — Dutch musician — works in the metal circuit of the Netherlands. The Dutch metal scene has a peculiarity: its international influence comes mainly from symphonic metal, a subgenre the country helped create and in which it holds the best-known bands — Within Temptation, Epica, Delain. But that is only part of the national output, which also includes technical death metal, doom and progressive projects. What unifies these strands is the working structure. The country has a dense network of studios, engineers and musicians serving all those branches, and geographic proximity means players move easily between projects in different genres — harder in countries where scenes are separated by hundreds of kilometres. It is a model producing versatile musicians out of practical necessity rather than aesthetic choice: whoever plays in several contexts has to command distinct vocabularies.
