Mitch Harris — born in the United States in 1970 — has been Napalm Death's guitarist since 1989, and is responsible for much of the harmonic texture the band developed from the 1990s onwards. He joined alongside Barney Greenway, at the moment the group was leaving pure grindcore and taking in elements of death metal on Harmony Corruption (1990). His contribution was to bring dissonant riffs and tension chords into music that until then had worked almost solely through speed — it is what gives the later records an oppressive character rather than merely a fast one. He also sings the high backing vocals that counter Greenway's roar, a device that became one of the group's sonic marks. He stepped back from touring in 2014 for family reasons, remaining tied to the band and taking part in recordings. His absence from the stage is one of the longest such situations in extreme metal, and the band has kept the position filled without formally replacing him.
