Nils Norberg

Nils Norberg — Nocturnal Rites' lead guitarist between 1997 and 2008 — was in the band throughout the phase that made it known outside Sweden. His period covers six albums, from The Sacred Talisman (1999) to The 8th Sin (2007), crossing the change of singer in 2000 and the stylistic turn that came with it. It is an unusual path: he joined when Nocturnal Rites was still a Swedish power metal band of high vocals and fantasy subject matter, and left when the group was already practising a modern melodic metal, heavier and more direct. Following that transformation meant rewriting his own function. In power metal, the lead guitarist is a display piece — long solos, fast scales, harmonies in thirds. In the sound the band adopted from Shadowland (2002) onwards, the solo shortens and submits to the riff and the chorus. Norberg crossed both logics within the same band, something few guitarists in the genre have had to do. He is also a player of solid technical grounding, respected in the Swedish circuit for the precision of his execution — a quality heard on the records of the group's most elaborate phase, Grand Illusion (2006) and The 8th Sin.
