Oscar Dronjak — born in Sweden in 1972 — is HammerFall's founding guitarist and principal composer, and one of those directly responsible for the survival of traditional heavy metal in Europe. When he put the band together in 1993, the genre was in a difficult position. Grunge dominated the market, death metal and black metal occupied the extreme circuit, and classic heavy metal — melodic riffs, singable choruses, epic subject matter — was treated as a dated thing. Glory to the Brave (1997) contradicted that diagnosis and had an immediate effect: it opened space for a whole generation of European bands that took up the traditional format again. His writing does not seek complexity. HammerFall's riffs are direct, built on clear progressions and designed to work live with the audience singing along. It is a deliberate decision, and fidelity to it over three decades is what gives the band's catalogue its coherence. Dronjak comes from the same Gothenburg scene that produced In Flames and At the Gates, and was part of Ceremonial Oath alongside musicians who would go on to melodic death metal. He chose the opposite path — and that is why he made a difference.
