Paul Joseph Owsinski — guitarist — handles the guitars in Trillium, Amanda Somerville's authorial project. Trillium's sonic design puts the guitar in an uncommon position. On Alloy (2011) and Tectonic (2018) the centre is Somerville's voice — a singer of wide range and solid technical training, who stacks vocal layers as part of the composition itself. The guitar must give the metal weight that justifies the genre without contesting space with those layers or with the orchestrations. The result is riff work of structural function rather than display: heavy harmonic support, with room deliberately left open in the mid register. It is the opposite of the soloist-guitarist logic that dominates much of European melodic metal — and it is what lets Trillium sound like music built around a voice, which is exactly what it is.
