Paul Landers — born in East Berlin on 9 December 1964 — is Rammstein's rhythm guitarist and one of the two members who come from the East German punk scene, alongside Flake Lorenz. The two played together in Feeling B in the 1980s, a time when making punk in the GDR meant operating under state surveillance and with no market structure at all. That formation left marks on Rammstein: the distrust of solemnity, the acid humour and the willingness to provoke while knowing what provocation costs. His function in the band is the foundation. While Richard Kruspe carries the main lines, Landers holds the riff with rigid precision, without variation and without space — it is that implacable repetition that gives Rammstein the mechanical texture bringing it close to industrial music. In a group where almost nothing is improvised, his role is precisely to ensure that nothing moves out of place. He has been in the original line-up since 1994 and has never left, like the other five.
