Pontus Norgren — born in Sweden in 1968 — has been HammerFall's guitarist since 2008, having replaced Stefan Elmgren when the latter left music to become a commercial pilot. His arrival was not that of a newcomer. Norgren already had a long career in the Swedish scene, including a spell in The Poodles, a melodic hard rock band, and work as a session musician and producer — the path of a sought-after player before taking a permanent position. His function in HammerFall is to supply the solos and melodic lines that contrast with Oscar Dronjak's riffs. The band plays traditional heavy metal of direct structure, and virtuosity appears in measured doses: the solos have to be memorable and short, subordinate to the chorus rather than competing with it. He has now been in the band longer than his predecessor and recorded all the group's recent output, from (r)Evolution (2014) to Avenge the Fallen (2024), also crossing the drum changes that marked the period.
