Raphael Dantas — Brazilian musician — works in the country's metal circuit. Over four decades Brazilian metal produced a number of technically qualified musicians out of all proportion to what its market structure could absorb. It is a surplus explained by a specific combination: the genre's late arrival in the country, which made a whole generation learn at once the accumulated repertoire of twenty years of international metal, and the absence of obvious professional paths, which turned technical study into a form of legitimation. The result is a scene where the average standard of playing is high and opportunities are few. Many Brazilian musicians in the genre end up building careers outside the country, in European or American bands — a route that became more common from the 2000s, as digital distribution shortened distances. Those who stay sustain the local scene: recording, playing and keeping running a structure that exists only because somebody decides to keep it running.
