Ruud Jolie has been Within Temptation's guitarist since 2001, and is the member who held the lead guitar role through practically the whole of the band's most prominent phase. Born in the Netherlands in 1976, he joined at the moment the group was leaving behind the gothic doom of its early years and adopting the full symphonic arrangement of Mother Earth (2000) and The Silent Force (2004). His function in that context is specific: in music where orchestra, choirs and lead voice occupy almost the whole spectrum, the guitar has to fit in without competing — carrying weight where needed and opening the way for short melodic interventions. He has formal musical training and keeps up For All We Know in parallel, an instrumental progressive rock project in which he takes on the writing and explores a freer vocabulary than the main band allows. He also works as a teacher. He is on all of Within Temptation's output since 2004, including Resist (2019) and Bleed Out (2023).
