Seth — born in Poland in 1979, given name Patryk Sztyber — has been Behemoth's guitarist since 2004, and also its backing vocalist. His function is the counterpart to Nergal in the two-guitar architecture that holds up the band's sound. Behemoth builds its tracks on tremolo lines overlapping in dissonant harmonies — a device inherited from black metal — combined with riffs of weight and articulation drawn from death metal. Playing that at extreme speed demands exact synchrony between the two guitarists: any misalignment turns the texture into indistinct noise. He was there through the group's whole phase of international reach, recording Demigod (2005), The Apostasy (2007), Evangelion (2009), The Satanist (2014) and the records that followed. His stay also gave the band continuity through the hardest period of its history: in 2010 Nergal was diagnosed with leukaemia and underwent a bone marrow transplant, with Behemoth halted until his recovery. The core formed by Seth, Orion and Inferno remained intact, and the band returned with The Satanist, its most celebrated work.
