Spencer Charnas — vocalist, lyricist and founder of Ice Nine Kills — is the author of one of the best-executed concepts in contemporary American metal. He founded the band in Boston while still a teenager, in the early 2000s, and spent more than a decade in transformation — the group began far from the metalcore it would later play, and took several records to find its shape. Charnas is the only member present throughout that history. His central idea arrived with Every Trick in the Book (2015): each track dedicated to a work of literature. He took the principle to its extreme on The Silver Scream (2018), a record on which every song corresponds to a specific horror film — from Halloween to The Shining — with lyrics that reconstruct the narrative and quote lines from the original. It is adaptation work, not loose reference, and it requires knowing the material thoroughly. That concept turned Ice Nine Kills into a phenomenon. The band developed live performances with sets, costumes and a staging of each track, and reached an audience far beyond metalcore — The Silver Scream and its 2021 sequel entered the American charts. It is a rare case in which the coherence of an idea, taken seriously to the end, is what determined a band's reach.
