Tim "Ripper" Owens

Tim "Ripper" Owens — American vocalist — lived out one of heavy metal's most improbable stories: he went from a Judas Priest cover band to being Judas Priest's singer. In 1996, with Rob Halford gone from the group for years, the band found him singing in a cover band in Ohio and hired him. Owens recorded Jugulator (1997) and Demolition (2001), plus live albums, and stayed until Halford's return in 2003. The story inspired the film Rock Star (2001), though Owens himself distanced himself from the Hollywood version. The situation was objectively unfair. Replacing Halford — one of the most recognisable voices in metal history — means being compared on every note, and no performance, however good, resolves that. After Judas Priest he sang in Iced Earth, recording The Glorious Burden (2004), and has kept an active career as a vocalist across various projects and bands. His voice has high range and sustained power — the tools the job requires. What his path documents is the structural problem of being the successor to a living myth.
