Lee Altus — born in 1966 — has been Exodus's guitarist since 2005, having replaced Rick Hunolt in the line-up that revived the band after the hiatus of the 1990s. He comes from Heathen, another band of the Bay Area thrash scene, which he has been part of since the 1980s and remains in today. That origin matters: he did not arrive from outside the world, but from within the same generation and the same city that produced Exodus, Testament and Metallica. His function is to share the guitars with Gary Holt, inheriting the logic Holt had built with Hunolt — alternating solos, harmonies across whole passages and parallel lines at high speed, which demand absolute picking synchrony. He was on Shovel Headed Kill Machine (2005), The Atrocity Exhibition: Exhibit A (2007), Exhibit B: The Human Condition (2010), Blood In, Blood Out (2014) and Persona Non Grata (2021), sustaining the band including in the periods when Holt was touring with Slayer.
