Sabaton

Sabaton formed in Falun, a mining town in central Sweden, in December 1999. The founding core was vocalist Joakim Brodén and bassist Pär Sundström, and Brodén — gravel-baritone voice, mirrored sunglasses, camouflage trousers — has been the band's fixed point ever since, writing the bulk of the music and lyrics through every upheaval that followed. Label trouble kept their earliest sessions shelved for years, so the record that actually introduced them was Primo Victoria (2005) on Black Lodge; the older material finally surfaced as Metalizer in 2007. What set Sabaton apart in a crowded European power metal field was a self-imposed restriction: every song would be about military history. Battles, campaigns, individual soldiers, doomed last stands. The research behind that concept is unusually serious for a metal band — regimental histories, memoirs and academic accounts, correspondence with historians, museums and veterans' associations, and visits to battlefields and archives while on tour. They are careful to write about events and the people caught in them rather than take political sides, a discipline that has kept them clear of the trouble war-themed metal often invites. In 2022 the Swedish Skeptics Association named them Public Educator of the year. Attero Dominatus (2006), The Art of War (2008, structured around Sun Tzu's treatise) and Coat of Arms (2010) built a steady following. Then in early 2012 the band nearly ended: guitarists Oskar Montelius and Rikard Sundén, drummer Daniel Mullback and keyboardist Daniel Mÿhr departed simultaneously, unwilling to sustain the touring schedule. The four regrouped as Civil War, also from Falun. Brodén and Sundström recruited Chris Rörland, Thobbe Englund and Robban Bäck and carried on with barely a gap. The album that emerged from that rupture, Carolus Rex (2012), became their commercial turning point — a concept record on the rise and fall of the Swedish Empire under Charles XII, recorded in full in both English and Swedish. It went multi-platinum at home and broke them internationally. Heroes (2014) topped the Swedish chart, and The Last Stand (2016) consolidated the gains. The Great War (2019) took the concept further still: an entire album on the First World War, issued in standard, narrated "history" and orchestral editions. Live, they became a spectacle act. Brodén fronts the show from a full-size tank-shaped stage riser with a rotating turret and heavy pyrotechnics. At home they run Sabaton Open Air, launched in Falun in 2008 as a single indoor show and grown into a multi-day festival with international bands, historical reenactors and a Viking market. Their most unexpected success has been Sabaton History, a YouTube channel launched on 7 February 2019 with historian Indy Neidell and TimeGhost History, pairing each song with a researched documentary episode. It ran roughly a hundred weekly episodes before shifting to a slower schedule, and turned the band into a genuine educational brand reaching far beyond metal listeners. The War to End All Wars (2022) returned to 1914-18; Legends (2025, on Better Noise) widened the lens to Hannibal, Joan of Arc, Genghis Khan and Miyamoto Musashi. Sabaton now sit among the largest metal bands in the world — over three million monthly Spotify listeners, a top-10 Swedish artist on the platform, European arena headliners, with a 31-date North American tour running through 2026.
