Adam Dutkiewicz — born in the United States in 1977 — is Killswitch Engage's guitarist, producer and principal sonic architect, and one of the most decisive figures in metalcore. His influence exceeds his own band. As a producer, Dutkiewicz defined the genre's sound in the 2000s: heavy guitars with clean definition, drums with a cutting attack, and melodic choruses that sit beside torn vocals without sounding like collage. He produced not only Killswitch Engage but also reference records by other bands of the circuit — which means the sonic standard of American metalcore passed, in large part, through his hands. Inside the band, he joined as a drummer and moved to guitar, the position from which he writes most of the material and sings the melodic backing vocals — the clean counterpoint to the guttural lines that is the genre's structural formula. He was on the whole discography, from Alive or Just Breathing (2002) to This Consequence (2025), crossing Jesse Leach's two spells and Howard Jones's decade. Live, he contrasts technical rigour with a deliberately comic presence — absurd costumes, mocking exchanges with the crowd — a stance unusual in a genre that takes itself seriously.
