Ben Bruce — guitarist, songwriter and founder of Asking Alexandria — is the only member present throughout the band's history. He put the group together in York, England, in the late 2000s, and the repertoire has been his across more than fifteen years. Asking Alexandria emerged at the height of British metalcore with a sound combining heavy breakdowns, melodic choruses and electronic elements — a formula that placed the band among the circuit's most listened-to names in the first half of the 2010s. His greater importance lies in having sustained the group through two changes of vocalist that could have ended it. Danny Worsnop, the voice of the early records, left in 2015; Denis Stoff took over for a short period; Worsnop returned in 2016. Each change divided the audience, and the band survived because the writing was always Bruce's. From The Black (2016) and the records that followed, he steered Asking Alexandria towards a progressively more melodic and less extreme sound — a path similar to that of other British bands of his generation, and one that earned him a new audience at the cost of part of the old.
