Björn Gelotte — born in Sweden in 1975 — is In Flames's guitarist and the band's principal composer since Jesper Strömblad's departure in 2010. His path inside the group is unusual: he joined in 1995 as a drummer, playing on The Jester Race (1996) and Whoracle (1997), and moved to guitar in 1998. Few musicians change instrument within the same band and take on, in the new post, the role of principal composer. As a guitarist he is the one who plays the two-voice harmonised lines that define the Gothenburg sound — melodies of Scandinavian folk inflection played in thirds over a death metal base. Colony (1999) and Clayman (2000) are the records on which that formula reaches its most recognisable form. After 2010 it fell to him and Anders Fridén to lead the band without its founder. In Flames has kept up regular output since then, following the more melodic and accessible direction begun in the 2000s — a choice that widened the audience and drove away part of the original listeners.
