Chris Broderick — born in the United States in 1970 — has been In Flames's guitarist since 2022, and is one of the most technically trained instrumentalists to join the band. His path comes from American metal. He made his name in Jag Panzer, the Colorado heavy metal band, and between 2008 and 2014 he was Megadeth's guitarist, recording Endgame (2009), Thirteen (2011) and Super Collider (2013). After that he founded Act of Defiance alongside drummer Shawn Drover, also formerly of Megadeth. His training is classical — he studied music formally and also plays string instruments of the classical tradition — which shows in a phrasing of unusual precision even among guitarists of the genre. Joining In Flames means playing a repertoire built on another logic: the band's guitars work through two-voice melodic harmonisation, not through technical display. It is an adjustment of function more than of ability, and his arrival settled the line-up with which the group recorded its most recent albums.
