Christian Andreu — born in France in 1976 — has been Gojira's guitarist since 1996, present since the band's founding in Bayonne. He forms with Joe Duplantier the guitar pair that defines the group's sound. Gojira works with riffs of heavy syncopation in irregular metres, and the two guitars do not merely double in unison: they hold the same figure with identical articulation to produce a compact block of sound, or separate into layers creating the almost mechanical texture characteristic of the band. That format demands absolute synchrony. Any misalignment between the two players undoes the mass effect Gojira pursues — and Andreu and Duplantier have played together for almost thirty years, which explains the precision audible on the records. He was on the entire discography, from Terra Incognita (2001) to Fortitude (2021), and is part of the line-up that has barely changed since the founding — a rare stability in any metal band with that much road behind it. In 2024 he played with Gojira at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games.
