Gojira are a French progressive death metal band from Ondres. Formed in 1996 as Godzilla by brothers Joe and Mario Duplantier, alongside guitarist Christian Andreu and bassist Jean-Michel Labadie, the group adopted the name Gojira in 2001. That founding lineup has remained unchanged for nearly three decades. Their sound fuses technical death metal with thrash, groove, and progressive metal. Gojira are equally known for lyrics about ecology, ocean conservation, and humanity's relationship with the planet, backed by real activism. From Mars to Sirius (2005) was their international breakthrough. L'Enfant Sauvage (2012) pushed them into the mainstream; Magma (2016) earned Grammy nominations, and Fortitude (2021) became their highest-charting album. On 26 July 2024, Gojira performed at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, the first metal band ever to do so. The studio version, "Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)," won the 2025 Grammy for Best Metal Performance.
