Christopher Amott — born in Sweden in 1977 — is a founding guitarist of Arch Enemy, with two spells in the band, and the younger brother of Michael Amott. He was in the original 1996 line-up and recorded the albums that defined the group's sound: Black Earth (1996), Stigmata (1998), Burning Bridges (1999), Wages of Sin (2001) and the run up to Rise of the Tyrant (2007), later returning for the phase of The Root of All Evil (2009) and Khaos Legions (2011). His contribution lies in the two-guitar architecture that is Swedish melodic death metal's trademark. The Amott brothers wrote lines harmonised in thirds and alternating solos in a vocabulary close to traditional heavy metal — a device which, over a base of blast beats and guttural vocals, produces the contrast that defines the genre. It is not ornament: it is what separates Gothenburg death metal from American death metal. After leaving Arch Enemy he continued with a solo career and other projects, keeping work of his own outside the band he helped found.
