Daniel Manso

Brazil

Daniel Manso — Brazilian musician — works in the country's metal circuit. One peculiarity of the Brazilian scene is that it never had a real period of decline. In the United States and Europe, metal went through sharp downturns — grunge in the 1990s, nu metal, then the emptying of the physical market — that dissolved bands and shrank entire scenes. In Brazil that did not happen the same way. Because the genre never depended on a market, it never suffered from that market's contraction either. The scene has kept working at relatively constant intensity since the 1980s, with the same model of independent production and direct circulation between bands and audience. It is a stability explained by precariousness: when there is nothing to lose in terms of commercial structure, changes in the market do not affect the operation. Brazilian metal survived every crisis of the record industry because it was never inside it.
