Dirk Sauer — born in Germany in 1971 — is a founding guitarist of Edguy, present since the band's formation in Fulda in the early 1990s. His function is rhythm guitar, which in German power metal means more than accompaniment: the genre is built on galloping riffs and lines harmonised in thirds between the two guitars, and it is that architecture that gives the tracks their epic character. Sauer is half of it alongside Jens Ludwig, and the two have worked together for more than thirty years. He was on the entire discography, from Kingdom of Madness (1997) to Monuments (2017), which includes Edguy's sharpest changes of direction: the epic power metal of the early records, the straight hard rock of Rocket Ride (2006) and the return to the classic format. Each of those phases demands a different kind of guitar writing. Edguy kept practically the same line-up from 1998 onwards — Tobias Sammet, Ludwig, Sauer, Tobias Exxel and Felix Bohnke — a stability almost no metal band with three decades on the road has managed to preserve.
