Emppu Vuorinen is Nightwish's founding guitarist and, alongside Tuomas Holopainen, one of the two members present throughout the band's history, since 1996. Born in Kitee, Finland, in 1978, he was part of the original line-up when the group was still an acoustic project, and has stayed through every phase — the three singers, the orchestral expansion, the arrival of folk instruments. His function is one of deliberate restraint. In an arrangement where orchestra, choirs, keyboards and lead voice occupy almost the whole spectrum, Nightwish's guitar rarely solos and almost never contests the foreground: it provides riff, weight and harmonic support, leaving the melodic space to the other layers. It is the opposite of what is expected of a metal guitarist, and it is precisely that discipline that allows the symphonic arrangement to work without turning into a contest. He is on the whole discography, from Angels Fall First (1997) to Yesterwynde (2024).
