Felipe Machado — Brazilian guitarist — is a co-founder of Viper, the band that played a decisive part in shaping Brazilian metal in the 1980s and 1990s. Viper emerged in São Paulo in 1985, put together by teenagers who were learning to play while they wrote. Soldiers of Sunrise (1987) was recorded when the members were between fifteen and eighteen — a heavy metal record of speed and ambition out of all proportion to the resources available, made in a country with no structure whatsoever for the genre. The band's historical importance has two dimensions. First, Viper proved it was possible to make metal of international standard from Brazil, some years before Angra confirmed it. Second, it was the band of origin of Andre Matos, who would leave to found Angra and become one of the central figures of Brazilian metal. Machado stayed with Viper through its various phases, across Matos's departure, the change of sonic direction in the 1990s and the later revivals. He has also worked in other projects and as a broadcaster, keeping an active presence in the scene he helped create.
