Fieldy — Reginald Arvizu, born in the United States on 2 November 1969 — is Korn's founding bassist and the author of a technique that became the trademark of an entire subgenre. His approach consists in treating the bass as a percussion instrument. Instead of sustaining notes or following the harmony, Fieldy strikes the strings with his thumb in a dry, repeated motion, producing a clicking, short, metallic sound with almost no defined pitch. The bass stops being a foundation and becomes part of the groove — a rhythmic function, not a harmonic one. That choice fits Korn's architecture exactly. Since the seven-string guitars occupy the low register and do not define melody clearly, the bass would have to compete for space in an already saturated band. By changing function it solves the problem and creates a sonic signature practically all of nu metal would copy. He is on the band's entire discography since 1994. He stepped back from touring in 2021 to address issues related to alcohol, keeping his tie to the group.
