Frank Bello — born in the Bronx, New York, on 9 July 1965 — has been Anthrax's bassist since 1984 and is the nephew of Charlie Benante, the band's drummer, who brought him into the group while he was still very young. His style is aggressive and direct: he plays with a pick rather than his fingers, which gives the bass a percussive attack able to cut through thrash's wall of guitars. In a genre where the bass usually vanishes in the mix, his can be heard. He is also the most expansive member onstage — leaping, running and goading the crowd while playing fast lines, a combination that demands considerable stamina. He sings backing vocals across practically the whole repertoire. His life brought a hard loss: a brother murdered in 1996, a crime never solved, which he recounted decades later in a memoir. He is on Anthrax's entire discography since Spreading the Disease (1985), with a single interruption between 2004 and 2005, and also maintains a solo career.
