Glauber Oliveira

Brazil

Glauber Oliveira — Brazilian guitarist — is part of Dark Avenger, the Curitiba band that occupies a place of its own in Brazilian metal history. Dark Avenger never made the fast power metal that dominated the Brazilian scene of the 1990s and 2000s. Its repertoire is epic and slow, heavy in atmosphere, built on Arthurian mythology and themes of loss — closer to doom and European epic metal than to Angra or Shaman. That format demands a specific guitar approach. There is no room for displays of speed; what the music asks for are weighty riffs, harmonic support and melodic solos working as counterpoint to the vocal narrative. It is arrangement work, not virtuosity. The band has four records across two decades: Dark Avenger (1995), Tales of Avalon: The Terror (2001), Tales of Avalon: The Lament (2013) and The Beloved Bones: Hell (2017), the last released in the year vocalist Mário Linhares died. It is a small discography, but one of unusual reach — and a reference for anyone looking in Brazilian metal for something beyond the European model.
