Hugo Santiago

Hugo Santiago — Brazilian guitarist — is part of Dark Avenger, one of the most singular bands in Brazilian metal. Formed in Curitiba in the 1990s, Dark Avenger built a repertoire that does not fit the pattern of Brazilian metal from that period. Instead of European power metal's speed, the band works with slow tempos, dense atmosphere and long narratives — the two volumes of Tales of Avalon, on the Arthurian cycle, and The Beloved Bones: Hell (2017), darker still in tone. In this context the guitar functions as the construction of space. The parts must sustain weight and mood across songs that unfold slowly, without speed as a device to hold the listener's attention. It is a kind of playing that depends more on choice of note and tone than on right-hand technique. The band has only four records in more than twenty years, which says something about the difficulty of sustaining an authorial, off-pattern project in Brazil — and also about the decision to release material only when it was ready.
