Jake Pitts — Black Veil Brides' lead guitarist — is the player who sustains the technical side of a band discussed above all for its image. His school is that of 1980s heavy metal and glam metal: solos built on the harmony, lines harmonised in thirds with the second guitar, and an execution vocabulary demanding precision at high tempo. It is a vocabulary most American heavy rock of his generation had abandoned, and which Black Veil Brides reintroduced along with the visual aesthetic of the same decade. He forms with Jinxx the guitar pair that gives the group its sonic architecture — riff and solo occupy structured space within the song, they do not appear as ornament. Pitts also works as a producer, and has taken increasing responsibility for the recording and mixing of the band's records over the years — a common path among guitarists who combine technical training with an interest in the studio, and one that explains the sonic consistency of the discography across several changes of direction.
