Jens Ludwig — born in Germany in 1977 — is a founding guitarist of Edguy, a band he helped put together while still at school in Fulda in the early 1990s. Edguy was born as a teenage project and became one of the central bands of German power metal in the generation after Helloween and Gamma Ray. Ludwig is the lead guitarist of that whole story, from Kingdom of Madness (1997) to Monuments (2017), crossing the epic phase of the early records, the straight rock of Rocket Ride (2006) and the return to the classic format in the 2010s. His solos are melodic and built on the harmony, in the German power metal tradition — they serve the song rather than interrupt it for display. That is what Tobias Sammet's repertoire demands: tracks with wide choruses, written to be sung by crowds, in which the guitar has to be memorable without competing with the voice. Together with Dirk Sauer, he forms the guitar pair that remained unchanged across the entire discography — Edguy kept practically the same line-up from 1998 onwards, a rare stability in any band of that longevity.
