Jeroen van Veen has been Within Temptation's bassist since 1996, a member of the founding line-up and one of the three musicians present from the band's beginning, alongside Sharon den Adel and Robert Westerholt. Born in the Netherlands in 1974, he crossed every phase of the group: the gothic doom of Enter (1997), the symphonic turn of Mother Earth (2000) and The Silent Force (2004), and the move towards modern rock from The Unforgiving (2011) onward. Each of those shifts substantially altered the function of the instruments, and the bass had to reposition itself in all of them. His playing is support without ornament, suited to an arrangement in which orchestra, choirs and lead voice contest the foreground. In such a crowded sonic context, the steadiness of the foundation is the condition for the rest to work — and that is what he has delivered for nearly three decades, up to Bleed Out (2023).
