Joey Concepcion — American guitarist — has been part of Arch Enemy since 2023. He joins a band whose identity depends directly on the role he takes. Swedish melodic death metal is defined by the architecture of two guitars working in harmony — lines in thirds and alternating solos in a vocabulary close to traditional heavy metal, over a base of blast beats and guttural vocals. That contrast is what separates the Gothenburg school from American death metal, and it falls to the second guitarist to hold half of it beside Michael Amott. His entry carries added weight in being an American in a Swedish band that practically defined the genre in its country — a position demanding command of a vocabulary formed out of another tradition. The catalogue he has to perform on tour spans almost thirty years and thirteen albums, from Black Earth (1996) to Blood Dynasty (2025), written across three distinct vocal phases and by different guitarists, and has to sound like the work of a single band.
