Johan Söderberg — born in Sweden in 1977 — has been Amon Amarth's guitarist since 1998, present across practically the band's entire relevant discography. He joined in time for Once Sent from the Golden Hall (1998), the group's first album, and stayed through the whole building of its identity — from a death metal band of the Swedish underground circuit to a recurring attraction at the largest European festivals. His function is to be Olavi Mikkonen's counterpart in the two-guitar configuration that defines Amon Amarth's sound. The band's melodies are played in harmony, with the two guitars running parallel lines in thirds — a device inherited from British heavy metal and applied here over a death metal base at mid tempo. It is that combination that gives the songs their epic character without recourse to orchestra or keyboard. Playing it demands absolute synchrony: harmonised lines only work if both instruments have identical articulation. It is precision work noticed only when it fails.
