Johnny Christ — Jonathan Seward, born in 1984 — has been Avenged Sevenfold's bassist since 2002, and is the youngest of the members. He joined while still a teenager, as the band's third bassist, in time to record Waking the Fallen (2003). His function is to hold together an ensemble that pulls in opposite directions. Avenged Sevenfold has two guitars of contrary temperaments, a singer who carries the melody and, in its first decade, a drummer who filled every bar with variation. In that arrangement the bass is the one thing that cannot move — and Christ plays with a full tone, firm attack and a discipline that rarely draws attention to itself. That steadiness mattered especially in the unstable years. He crossed the change of direction of City of Evil (2005), the death of The Rev in 2009 and the rebuilding that followed, staying at his post while almost everything around him changed. He is on every album since 2003, including Nightmare (2010), Hail to the King (2013), The Stage (2016) and Life Is But a Dream... (2023).
